Hippeastrums are renown for a spectacular flowering display for up to 6 weeks from mid spring into summer. Also known as Amaryllis, this herbaceous perennial produces showy trumpet-shaped flowers.  They are suited to both pots and garden beds, they can be also be used to create stunning feature gardens. Growing Hippeastrum varieties is surprisingly easy – they’re tolerant of tough conditions, and many gardeners consider them virtually indestructible.
There are a few basic things to remember, feed them if you want spectacular flowers and don’t over-water, allowing the roots to dry between watering, if you live in the wet tropics? Grow them in pots so the water doesn’t pool during the wet season.
Be careful though, once you start your hippeastrum collection… it can become addictive.. or even obsessive.
