A new season of beautiful blooms abounds in 2023

2023 was our most successful year of glorious blooms so far. We had thousands of hippeastrum flowers from August through to January. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take photographs of them all. We even lost hundreds from the phone that decided to have a meltdown right at the end of the season. However, we have some beauties to share with you.

As you may already know, we sell seeds in single- and double-crossed lots, usually grouped by colours. The exotic shaped ones you see in these images are sold in groups of exotics, these include Papilio, Yungasence, Mandonii and Buksovii. We also have Chico and Robusta varieties to name just a few of the unique varieties we grow.

Because we have so many varieties, we are busily working on cataloguing systems and streamlining our growing processes. This will help us to know exactly what we have and where to find it quickly. Due to our experimenting with crossing varieties and growing and selling hippeastrums at all points of their lifecycle this is difficult. We have complexities that mass producers of identical blooms do not have. This gives our fledgling business heart and character that you may not find elsewhere.

As a result of the large range of flowers we have on hand, it is difficult to list everything online. So, if you see any flowers in particular that tickle your fancy, please contact us. You can email us at sales@heddysue.com and we can find something unique, that we know you’ll like. We are more than happy to try to fulfill your hippeastrum dreams.

Happy, Healthy Hippeastrums- a look at 2020

Hippeastrums are one of the most glorious summer blooms you can find. Here are just a few from the 2020 season. They can easily be grown from seeds, however, there is variation from the parent stock. Growing from seed and choosing your pollination stock is an exciting and rewarding hobby for those of us who are patient and avid gardeners.
Crossing your blooms for stunning features such as picotee edges, frills, striking size and unique colouring in petals and throat can reward you with some absolutely amazing flowers which are wonderful for flower arrangements and garden features.

Hippeastrums are drought tolerant, low maintenance and widely known albeit under stated. They proliferate in dappled sun and shady places but can also handle quite sunny positions. Adaptable for most garden settings, indeed perfect for borders and pots alike. Hippeastrums include a wide variety of species which have unique and distinct characteristics which are perfect for collectors and enthusiasts.

The babies from these crosses will take on a variety of characteristics from both parents. Pot luck can be such fun!
